Causes of Gaps

Gaps occur for a variety of different reasons. Trauma, decay, or gum disease may have led to the loss of one or more teeth. Sucking your thumb as a child can also create gaps in the teeth. Some patients may have a larger jawbone and smaller teeth, leaving gaps in between one or more teeth. If you want to close the gaps in your smile, we must first evaluate the cause so we can recommend an appropriate treatment.

Treatment for Gapped Teeth

The treatment for gapped teeth varies depending on what caused the gap in the first place. If you have a gap due to a lost tooth, you will need a different treatment than someone who is not missing any teeth. At White River Dental, we will customize your treatment to meet your unique needs.

Cosmetic Treatment

Adults with slight gaps between the teeth (perhaps not addressed as a child) may prefer to go the cosmetic route. When there are no underlying issues creating the gaps, these cosmetic methods can provide an instant improvement in your smile. Cosmetic procedures that can address these gaps include porcelain veneers and dental bonding.

Both of these procedures can add a natural-looking width to the teeth to fill in small gaps. Both options are tooth colored. We can customize the materials to perfectly match the shade of your surrounding teeth.

For larger gaps, orthodontic treatment is usually the better choice. We offer Six Month Smiles®, which uses clear brackets to gently straighten the teeth in as little as six months. We also offer ClearCorrect™, which uses clear aligner trays that fit over the teeth. Both options offer our patients an inconspicuous way to align the teeth, eliminating any gaps.

If the gaps in your smile are the result of tooth loss, you will need some type of prosthetic. The type of restoration you need will depend on the number of teeth lost and your jawbone density. For patients missing one or more teeth, we recommend dental implants. Dental implants can replace the tooth roots to prevent bone loss. Implants can then support a crown, bridge, or dentures to replace the missing teeth. We also offer traditional dental bridges and dentures to meet your personal preference and fit within your budget.

Everyone was very professional, yet very laid back, making an unpleasant procedure much easier to have done. The follow-up call from the doctor showed that he cares about his patients. Stephanie C.
