What is Philips Zoom! teeth whitening?

Philips Zoom! is one of the most well-known in-office teeth whitening methods. Zoom! users appreciate its effective, quick results in a safe and controlled environment. Zoom! uses a highly concentrated peroxide whitening gel and a proprietary blue light which stimulates the whitening process. This system allows for immediate results, as opposed to the gradual change of at-home whitening methods.

Before the Zoom! teeth whitening procedure

Before deciding whether Zoom! is right for you, your dentist will conduct a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums to ensure proper health. Your dentist will talk with you about your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits to determine if you will benefit from whitening. This consultation will help you and your dentist agree on the whitening method that will best fit your wants and needs.

It’s important to note that in some circumstances, whitening may not be the best option. For example, patients with existing dental work, such as permanent crowns or veneers may want to ask their dentist about other options. Artificial teeth will not respond to conventional whitening agents. In addition, patients with a strong gag reflex may have a difficult time undergoing the entire procedure. Zoom! is typically not recommended for patients under 13 years of age, as well as pregnant or lactating women.

During the Zoom! teeth whitening procedure

The complete Zoom! procedure takes less than an hour, but a regular teeth cleaning is recommended prior to the teeth whitening session.

The procedure begins with a short preparation to cover the lips and gums, while leaving the teeth exposed. The dentist or dental assistant then applies the Zoom! whitening gel, a highly-concentrated 25 percent hydrogen peroxide gel, and sets the Zoom! light. As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel to break up stains and discoloration, leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged. The gel remains in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated.

Typically, the gel is applied for three 15-minute sessions of light activation, for a total treatment time of 45 minutes. Afterward, a fluoride paste is applied to the teeth to help reduce sensitivity.

After the Zoom! teeth whitening procedure

Users may feel some sensitivity in the days following the procedure, but this usually subsides after a couple of days. Your dentist may recommend brushing with a sensitivity-reducing toothpaste in the days prior to and/or following the procedure to help with this.

As with any of the teeth whitening systems, touch-ups may be needed occasionally, as teeth tend to darken over time. You may be given an option to get an at-home touch up system with trays and whitening gel. Your dentist will instruct you on how to use this.

Additionally, your dentist will consult with you about certain foods you may want to avoid to keep your smile whiter for longer. Coffee, tea, wine, and cola are all know to darken teeth, as is tobacco use.

Everyone was very professional, yet very laid back, making an unpleasant procedure much easier to have done. The follow-up call from the doctor showed that he cares about his patients. Stephanie C.
