Dental Implants
Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. The implants are tiny titanium posts which are placed into the jaw bone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, dental implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration which occurs when teeth are missing.
Dental implants are changing the way people live! With them, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and enjoy life.

Evaluation for Dental Implants
If, like many others, you feel implant dentistry is the choice for you, we ask that you undergo a dental/radiographic examination and health history. During these consultation visits, your specific needs and considerations will be addressed by either Dr. Strickland or by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon referred by our practice. Your questions and concerns are important to us and our team will work with you very closely to help make your procedure a success.
Dental Implant Procedure
Dental implants are metal anchors, which act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jaw bone. Small posts are then attached to the implant, which protrude through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, dental implants are placed within your jaw bone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums, gradually bonding with the jaw bone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, your restorative dentist designs the final bridgework or denture, which will ultimately improve both function and aesthetics.
After the dental implant has bonded to the jaw bone, the second phase begins. The surgeon will uncover the implants and attach a small healing collar. Dr. Strickland can then start making your new teeth. An impression must be taken. Then posts or attachments can be connected to the implants. The replacement teeth are then made over the posts or attachments. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months. Most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.

Dental Implants Frequently Asked Questions
Getting dental implants is a commitment. It can take several months and involves invasive dental surgery. It is normal to have questions about the procedure so that you can make an informed decision about whether implants are the right choice to replace your missing teeth. We’ve answered some of the commonly asked questions below.
Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
If you have one or more teeth missing and are in good health, you are most likely a good candidate for implants. However, if you have active periodontal disease, it must be treated before treatment can begin.
Some individuals may not be candidates for implants, including those with uncontrolled diabetes, certain autoimmune diseases, active cancers, or blood clotting disorders. If you have a history of using certain medications, it may affect your ability to get a dental implant. Please consult with our dentist on any medications you are currently using or have used.
How much do dental implants cost?
The cost of dental implants varies depending on multiple factors, including the type of implants, how many are placed, and the complexity of the surgery. Although dental implants are costly, White River Dental does everything it can to minimize the cost to patients without compromising on quality or care. The best way to get an accurate price is to schedule an implant consultation. Our dentists will prepare a detailed cost breakdown, explaining what is included.
How do dental implants work?
Dental implants consist of three parts: the titanium implant, an abutment, and the restoration. The implant is placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth or teeth. It fuses with the surrounding jawbone, creating a stable base for the restoration and stimulating new bone growth in the jaw.
An abutment is a slender metal pin or clasp inserted into the implant. The restoration is then attached to the implant via the abutments. The restoration, whether a crown or a dental arch resembling a denture, replaces the visible portion of a missing tooth or teeth.
The implant and restoration work like natural teeth. They allow you to bite and chew thoroughly, with the bite pressure diffused through the implants and into the jawbone, just like natural tooth roots.
What is the timeline to fully complete the dental implant process?
For most patients, the time from initial consultation to complete healing and permanent restoration is three to nine months. If bone grafting is needed, it can take up to a year due to the additional healing time required before implants are placed. Patients receiving Same-Day Implant Retained Dentures may receive their restorations sooner, but the healing time for the implants and surrounding bone will still take several months.
Will the procedure be painful?
There is no pain during implant surgery because we numb the area with a local anesthetic and offer anesthesia such as nitrous oxide or IV sedation to relax you and lull you into a light state of semi-consciousness.
How long is recovery? Will I need to miss work?
Most patients take 3-4 days off work if they replace missing teeth with implants. On day three, you will probably experience peak pain and swelling, after which both should subside quickly. Take it easy for the first several days, avoid strenuous activities, and sleep with your head elevated. We will provide detailed post-op instructions for your comfort and safety. Most people feel “back to normal” after a week.
Can my implants be completed on the same day?
It depends on the type of implants used and your overall health. Most patients can walk out of their implant surgery wearing a temporary denture or prosthetic, which will be replaced in several weeks or months by a permanent restoration that is more durable and custom-designed.
How long will my dental implants last?
Studies show that most patients’ dental implants last 30 years or more, effectively making them a lifetime solution to tooth loss. The visible restorations can last up to 20 years. However, they may eventually need repairing or replacement due to wear and tear or injury. Fortunately, a damaged crown or arch can be repaired or replaced without disturbing the implant in the jawbone.
